Hello and a hearty tail-wag welcome to all our new members of the All-American Dog Runner family! If you’re passionate about hitting the pavement (or the trails) with your four-legged best friend by your side, then you’ve found your pack.

I’m Pamela Schmidlin, but you can call me the All-American Dog Runner. Over the past three decades, I’ve had the joy of running alongside over 20 dogs – each with their unique stride and spirit. Along this incredible journey, I’ve also grown as a Certified IIN Health Coach, a Published Author, a Professional Photographer, and a certified professional dog obedience trainer. Now, I’m here to share this path with you, whether you’re lacing up your running shoes for the first time or looking to take your running adventures with your pup to the next level.

Before we set off together, I want to share some essential steps to ensure you and your dog enjoy every run safely and to the fullest:

Starting Safely With Your Four-Legged Runner

1. Health First: Always check in with your vet and healthcare provider to ensure you and your dog are fit for the run.
2. The Right Gear: Invest in a comfortable, fitting collar or harness for your dog, and a suitable leash for yourself.
3. Step with Care: Proper footwear for you and paw protection for your dog is a must to tackle any terrain comfortably.
4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Never underestimate the importance of water for both you and your dog during your runs.
5. Clean Up After Your Run Buddy: Being a responsible dog companion means always having doggy bags ready.
6. Visibility is Key: Opt for clothing and gear that’s suited for any time of day or weather conditions.
7. Emergency IDs: Wear ID and keep one on your dog too, just in case.
8. Basic Commands: Ensure your dog has a good grasp of basic commands for a smoother run.
9. Start Slow: Pace yourselves; remember, it’s not a race. Build your distance and speed gradually.
10. Progress One Step at a Time: Focus on achieving one goal before moving to the next.

Listen to Your Dog

A personal anecdote that’s close to my heart involves my beloved dogs Skyler, Sandy, and Candycane. Years ago, during a trail run, Skyler taught me an invaluable lesson about listening to our dogs. Just short of completing our run, she insisted on walking, signaling her retirement from running. This moment of understanding between us opened new avenues for our workouts, leading us to discover Doga (Yoga with your Dog). It’s a beautiful reminder that our dogs always communicate with us, and it’s our job to listen and adapt.
