Moving/ Adding locations for a safe place….
So today, we’ll be moving or adding locations. And going into different rooms and having Scout go to a “safe place” in each room. This is all working up to the big picture- patience is a virtue I know but even I get ants in my pants awaiting the final results. LOL!
So, we’ll go to other rooms in the house and have Scout basically start from a given location, then we’ll tell him (and lure him if needed) to “go to a safe place” or basically say “safe place” showing him a certain spot we want him to go to. And as he makes his way towards the location, we can reward and treat him- praise him- etc for each little step he takes toward the spot. Or if he shows he is ready to go there right away we will reward him for going to the spot right away (again it depends on the dog’s participation and all, yes the dog guides the training.
Steps for today:
First the steps are basically the same for the last few days but in different areas. This way Scout realizes that there can be more than one safe spot in the world today- as well as his human counterpart realizing the same thing.
So we’ll start out say at the doorway or walkway and I will scan the room looking for the “spot”.
Next I will tell Pam “Safe Spot” or “Go to the safe spot” while pointing to the the desired spot. As soon as he makes his way towards the spot say good Scout- good boy, etc.
Once he gets to the spot have Scout sit and stay in the spot and praise, reward with a treat, and don’t forget to click with the clicker (as a click is a sign a treat is on it’s way). Click as soon as his rear hits the ground to sit. Timing is critical with clicker training.
Now we’ll try this in other rooms and even head outside to find some safe spots outside as well.
Until tomorrow and more training, have a happy and healthy tail waggin’ day!
